OH&S Laws and Procedures
The difference between the OH&S Act and a regulation is the Act contains the laws that have been outlined by the Victorian Workcover Authority and regulations are the provisions in place to ensure the Act is followed.

The sole responsibility employers must adhere to as outlined in the Act is, to provide all employees with a safe working environment without risks to health; this also applies to independent contractors and their employees who are present.

As for employees, It’s their responsibility to behave responsibly to ensure the safety of themselves and others present, whilst also complying with any instruction from their employer regarding health and safety.

Heath and Safety Representatives (HSR) are employees who have received appropriate training and are nominated by their DWG (Designated Work Groups) to perform a checks of their workspaces and seek out and resolve hazards, they are also given certain powers to help them maintain a safe workspace.

The HSR for the ICT department at Kangan Institute is

Workplace Inspectors are Representatives of the Victorian Workcover Authority that are required to perform routine inspections of workplaces and ensure there are no present hazards. They are given the authority search any workplace, take samples, issuing directions to employee/rs and also issuing and enforcing infringement notices.

Emergency Procedures
The First Aid Officer for the ICT department at Kangan Institute is

There two fire extinguishers located in the ICT department building. The first is located nearby the front door, and the second in located near the drinking fountain towards the rear exit.

The Emergency Evacuation Plan in the ICT department building is located by the exits at either end of the I buildingAnd its instructions require staff and students to evacuate to the specified areas in the carparks

The counseling office is located in C Building in a hallway left from the front of the canteen.

The Kangan Institute’s smoking policy specifies that it’s prohibited to smoke on campus grounds, there are various areas around campus where signage is posted reaffirming this policy.
